Where does Tillage Fit?

A new project involving CSIRO, NSW I&I, EH Graham, CSU and FarmLink Research Limited. Funded by GRDC this project will investigate if there are any benefits of a periodic, strategic tillage in an otherwise no-till farming system. Nutrient stratification, disease control, lime incorporation, alleviating livestock compaction and integrated weed management are potential benefits of a strategic tillage. We want to know if the use of a strategic tillage will undo all the benefits gained from the no-till or zero-till system.
The project will measure all aspects of soil structure, soil disease, moisture retention, soil carbon, weed control and soil erosion in both a no-till system and a strategic tillage. Several sites across the FarmLink region will be implemented. Some will involve small plot trial work while others will be large scale farmer demonstration sites. Results will be available on members only section of website.
