Canola in Depth (impact of subsoil constraints) - 2007 to 2009
Project Details (2007 to 2009):
Previous research has indicated that subsoil constraints are one of the key factors, other than disease, influencing declining canola yields. In the 'Canola Survey & Modelling' project (see link below), 60% of paddocks surveyed to the south of the FarmLink region showed severe root restriction and yielded 10 to 50% below potential. Subsequent soil analyses identified a range of subsoil constraints including compaction, sodicity, salinity and subsurface acidity.
As a result, GRDC funded a new project to further investigate the impact subsoil constraints are having on canola yields. This project, 'Canola in Depth', commenced in 2007 and is a collaborative project involving the EH Graham Centre for Agricultural Innovation, CSIRO, FarmLink, Victorian DPI and the University of Melbourne.
