Canola Direct Heading

In response to seasonal conditions and grower interest FarmLink Research Limited implemented several demonstration sites and two small plot trials to test the value of using crop sealing products. Growers in Europe and USA have been using crop sealant products on Canola when direct heading. The products are used to seal canola pods from moisture and prevent seed shattering losses when harvesting. The 2010 harvest saw these products used widely in the FarmLink region on Canola, wheat and barley.
FarmLink Research, in collaboration with Agspec and Nufarm, tested two products on canola with the additional treatments of products plus Roundup herbicide. Control treatments of windrowing and direct heading were used as comparisons to the treatments in small plot trials at Milbrulong. As well as this site two commercial canola evaluations were setup at Wagga & Junee.
FarmLink Research, in cooperation with I&I NSW, applied product to wheat trial plots at Galong to test the effectiveness of the products in reducing sprouting caused by harvest rainfall. We also conducted a commercial evaluation on Lupins at Marrar to see if the products helped retain seed in that crop. Results will be available on the members only section of the web site.
